The city of St. Albans is located in Kanawha County along the Kanawha River at the mouth of the Coal River in Southwestern part of West Virginia. The city was laid out in 1816 and was known by several different names. The city was incorporated in 1868 and was named St. Albans in 1871. The latest population estimate available (2005) for the city of St. Albans reflects a population of 11,105 people. About nineteen percent (19.3%) of the population is under 18 years of age and about twenty-four percent (23.8%) is 65 years of age or older. There are 5,178 households in St. Albans and about 3,370 families.
