The community of Salem (originally known as New Salem) is located in North Central West Virginia in Harrison County. The town was originally incorporated in 1794. The community has a rich history as a frontier community and has experienced more than its share of fires and floods. Local attractions include Fort New Salem, a living history frontier settlement. Coal, oil and gas resources have historically contributed to the local economy. Salem College was established in the community in 1888 and is now Salem International University. The latest population estimate available (2005) for the town of Salem reflects a population of 1,976 people. Over nineteen percent (19.5%) of the population is under 18 years of age and 16.6% is 65 years of age or older. There are 745 households in Salem and about 397 families.
